Weekly Game Update: June 5th - June 11th, 2022

This was a super duper busy week, as there was a lot of rushing around, doing last minute prep for the new kittens. And then, we picked them up and brought them home! :D They’re doing really well so I’m glad that all that rushing seems to have been worth it! They’re still settling in, and we’re still busy making sure they happy and healthy (plus still more tidying so that they’ll eventually have reign of the whole apartment lol), but I think we’re past the constant rushy stage.

Oh and here’s a picture of the two little troublemakers, named Honeybear and Butternut :)

So yeah, as you might expect, not a lot of game progress this week. I did beat Ys IX though, and I started a few other new ones :) Still need to get to work on that Ys IX review though lol. Hopefully it won’t take too long? Anyway, on to the updates!

Progress Updates

Backbone

I did a random game roll (roll #3!), and what I got was Backbone. It’s a noir point and click mystery game where all the characters are animals. You play as a raccoon detective, and his first case in the game is to find proof of a husband’s infidelity. You wander around, talking to people and look for clues about the husband and where to find him.

That’s as far as I got anyway, cause unfortunately this was a doozy for me. Point and click adventure games are something I don’t often enjoy all that much, so unfortunately that already makes it a much harder sell for me. I did try my best to give it a fair shot, but I found it to be incredibly boring. Looks wise, it’s amazing, but the dialogue (aka what’s basically the gameplay) is so dull and not interesting to me at all. There’s just an incredible amount of fluff in it, that doesn’t tell me how to proceed, nor does it give me much in the way of character development, humour, intrigue, worldbuilding, or anything somewhat of interest.

Having said that, from what I can tell, this probably isn’t a bad game. I could easily be missing something, or what’s here could be a lot more engaging to someone else. It’s just one of those that really didn’t mesh with my personal tastes.

Random game roll wise though, I’m currently at a 1/3 success rate, so that’s lame! I’m not upset about it… I’m just keeping track cause why not lol.

Everybody’s Golf

I actually really like golf games (and really most other kinds of arcadey sports games), but I’m pretty bad about actually playing them, so it’s been a long time since I last picked one up. However, I recently learned that the online support for Everybody’s Golf will be shut down on September 30th, 2022. I don’t really care about online play, but once it shuts down the platinum trophy will become unattainable (because of FISHING of all things lol). While I’m not huge on getting platinums, for some reason I decided that I really wanted this one and that gave me the push to just start it!

I’m only about 2 hours in but I’m having a lot of fun so far! The tournaments in the game (the way to proceed in the single player “story”) are really quick and breezy, and overall just feel really good to play. The Versus matches (random CPUs who challenge you on occasion), are slightly slower but not really by much. I haven’t gotten past the first golf course, but I don’t even mind that either, which is pretty rare for me.

There are a few problems though, although they haven’t bothered me too much honestly. First is that the load times can be pretty long. I haven’t timed them or anything, but it’s definitely noticeable. Thankfully the vast majority of the loading is done at the start of the course, so it’s very quick to load from one hole to the next.

The other thing is that I feel like the game doesn’t tell you a whole lot about how to play, but maybe it will teach more as the game goes on? There’s a lot of terms being thrown around that I wasn’t familiar with, which was a bit confusing. I was still able to play just fine with the info given, but I wish there was maybe a glossary somewhere.

Regardless, I can’t wait to play more!

Backlog Update

Backlog: 1541 games (+4)
Time to beat: 1435 days, 18 hrs (+2 days, 2 hrs)

Ok, those increase in numbers are a lot more reasonable lol. They’re all from subscription services too, so it’s not like I’m the problem here, right? XD There’s probably going to be a few more additions this month though, based on that recent Xbox showcase thingy.

And that’s it! Really looking forward to playing more golf and spending more time with the kittens! I also really want to start a meatier game (or 2? or 3?), but I’m having a little trouble deciding lol.

Looking at my game goals list, there’s quite a few that are in series that are either getting new games soon, or I just really want to continue/start them already. I don’t want to start another PS4 game, cause I really don’t like switching discs if I can help it, but other than that it’s hard to narrow down lol.

So, the potentials currently are:

  • Assassin’s Creed (PS3)

  • Bravely Second: End Layer (3DS)

  • Ciel nosurge Offline (Vita) - with some sort of translated walkthrough

  • Criminal Girls: Invite Only (Vita)*

  • Dungeon Travelers 2 (Vita)

  • Etrian Mystery Dungeon (3DS)

  • Fantasy Life (3DS)*

  • Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (Steam)

  • Mary Skelter Nightmares (Vita)

  • Nier (PS3)*

  • SMT Devil Summoners: Soul Hackers (3DS)**

  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Switch)

*replay
**technically not on list but does have a sequel coming out soonish

So uh, if you have any thoughts, let me know! Otherwise, we’ll see what I start I guess lol.
